Blog post 5 investigative gaps
When it comes to the Zodiac killer's case there are many different investigative gaps when it comes to understanding and solving who the Zodiac is. To start, since most of his killings took place in the late 60s to possibly the early 70s there was much difficulty in using evidence to match someone's identity. A huge part of this case specifically was the lack of DNA evidence because DNA fingerprinting was invented in the early 80s, over a decade after the killings in the case. On top of this most evidence has been mishandled and possibly contaminated due to the lack of knowledge for the future in forensics testing. Another gap that involves finger prints now from the case is the identity and possibilities of who the Zodiac may be. So far the only suspects we've had are someone on the scene of one of the killings who we have nothing about other than a police sketch and a man named Gary Francis Poste who does not have matching fingerprints, lack of connecting evidence, and died in 2018. Another gap in investigations was the lack of communication and effort from police throughout multiple instances. One instance is police not sharing and connecting with other local police departments, leading to evidence being spread apart. Another example is when the cab driver was killed and police arrived on the scene looking for a black man when the witness said it was a white man, allowing potentially the Zodiac killer to slip through the fingers. Another instance the Zodiac could have been caught in action was the 4th of July killing, when police didn't show up to the scene due to the caller claiming he heard gunshots while the police believed the caller to be wrong and assumed they were fireworks.
